AI in Dental Imaging: Can It Analyze X-Rays More Precisely?

Technology is developing at rapid speed, and dentists are always looking for ways to deliver more accurate diagnoses. AI (artificial intelligence) is becoming increasingly integrated into dental offices nationwide, serving as a second pair of eyes for dental X-rays. Don’t worry if all of this is new to you; keep reading to learn exactly how it works and how it benefits you.

AI: Its Role in Dental X-rays

Once X-rays are taken, AI software, which is a trained computer-vision model, is applied. At Rauchberg Dental, my team and I use Overjet, which compares your images to thousands of others. This makes it easier for our team to diagnose oral health problems with more confidence and avoid overlooking early symptoms that are often missed when relying solely on visual examination.

Other practices use an overlay on X-rays that highlights and pinpoints cavities, bone loss, pulp, enamel, and other restorations.

This is good news for your checkups and cleanings, as we can detect signs of decay faster and administer prompt treatment. The eye can only identify small differences, but those that occur over time can be harder to find. For example, alveolar bone loss from gum disease can be hard to monitor, but with AI, we can track it more closely.

Should You Be Worried About Your Dentist Using AI for Dental X-Rays?

No technology or software is 100% foolproof, so while it has benefits, it shouldn’t be the only diagnostic method. If you think about it, your teeth can still hurt even if your X-rays don’t show a problem. This is why a dental exam is necessary.

You can also get a false positive. Your dentist should double-check any areas of concern to confirm them with greater confidence. AI technology also can’t replace the benefits and in-depth visuals provided by 3D imaging. It is still necessary for more complex treatments like dental implants.

The dental field is the next logical space for AI to enter. As a powerful tool, it can give dentists a second set of eyes to catch problems early and diagnose a patient’s condition. But don’t think your dentist will avoid reviewing your scans because of this new technology. Instead, they’ll use it to spend more time making sure your oral health is taken care of and that you continue to enjoy life with a healthier smile.
