A tried-and-true solution for a healthier, straighter smile is traditional braces. They use a wire and bracket system that can correct a wide range of misalignments and malocclusions. One reason they are effective is because of rubber bands, or elastics. They are something many patients often need, but are they really necessary? Here’s a short guide on how important they are for orthodontic treatment.
Why Do I Have to Wear Rubber Bands?
Braces apply a gentle force on your teeth to move them into their desired positions. This helps with alignment, but additional pressure is needed to improve how your upper and lower dental arches come together. Rubber bands allow this as they create a targeted force that shifts your jaw. They are often used to fix an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or an open bite. You might also need elastics to adjust the position of a tooth or for spacing between teeth.
How Do Elastics Work?
Elastics are great for many people’s treatments to get more complex movements, but they work because they are attached to specific brackets. They may be horizontally, vertically, or in a specific pattern, but it’s important to wear them exactly how you are shown to ensure they work properly.
For instance, connecting teeth on the upper jaw with molars on the lower dental arch can correct an overbite. The opposite of this can be used for an underbite, but your dentist will show you exactly where they should be attached.
I’m Struggling to Keep Up with My Rubber Bands
You will need to wear your rubber bands as directed to keep your treatment on track, but a few people might find it difficult. They may be uncomfortable at first, but skipping them entirely can delay your results.
The fastest way you can get used to them is by simply wearing them for however long your dentist says. Most patients need them all day and night, only removing them when eating or brushing. But by keeping them in, your mouth can adjust.
You will also need to change these elastics daily. However, they can be easy to misplace since they are small, or they may snap. Keep a few extras with you to ensure you can replace them whenever. Don’t double up on them as well, as doing so can apply too much pressure and damage your teeth.
By staying consistent with your rubber bands, you can feel confident knowing that your braces treatment will continue as planned.
