5 Common Problems (& Solutions) with Braces

Braces have straightened millions of smiles since their current design became mainstream in the 1970s. By bonding brackets directly to the teeth and using wires to guide them into their desired position, traditional metal braces are a reliable way to get the smile you’ve always wanted. However, although recent braces have become even more comfortable, they still require getting adjusted to. Here are five common problems that occur when first wearing braces…and how you can get more comfortable on your journey to a picture-perfect smile!

#1. Soft Tissue Irritation

In the very beginning of your path toward straighter teeth with braces, you can expect a bit of irritation in your mouth as it gets used to the new brackets and wires. You will most likely feel the most discomfort on the inside of your cheeks and lips. Although it will improve within a short amount of time, dental wax is an excellent immediate solution. By placing this water-resistant, flavorless material over the sharp edges of your braces, you will be able to ease any irritation caused by your braces. When you are ready to eat or clean your teeth, you can simply remove the wax.

#2. Swollen Gums

While it may not seem like it, inflamed gums are actually a positive thing during orthodontic treatment because it helps your teeth move more easily. However, if the swelling becomes too severe, it can make aligning teeth more difficult (not to mention more painful!). If your swollen gums become too uncomfortable, be sure to visit your dentist as soon as you can. They can get to the root of the issue and give you the necessary treatment, such as a deep cleansing or encouraging a change to your oral health routine.

#3. Loose Teeth

Your pearly whites may feel a bit loose as they are being moved into their desired position. One of the best ways to give them more stability is to steer clear of hard, crunchy, or chewy foods that can make them move around more. Choose more braces-friendly options, such as soft and nutritious foods like yogurt, soups, and oatmeal. If your teeth continue to feel loose after your braces have been removed, wearing your retainer as recommended should help to firmly set them in their desired permanent position.

#4. Poking Archwire

The archwire in your braces is essential in guiding your pearly whites into the correct positions. However, it can get broken due to the constant tension. This can cause its sharp edges to poke your mouth. A broken archwire is not only very uncomfortable and annoying, but it can also lead to an infection developing in your mouth, which could possibly delay your final smile. This is why it’s crucial to visit your dentist as soon as possible so they can fix it. To keep you comfortable in the meantime, you can place dental wax over the end of the archwire so it is not so irritating.

#5. Temporary Speech Issues

In general, most people with braces don’t experience changes to their speech when they begin treatment. However, some people do experience temporary changes in how they speak since the tongue moves against the back of the teeth to create distinct sounds. This can require a bit of an adjustment if your orthodontic is in the way. The good news is that learning how to speak correctly with your braces won’t take long! Once you get used to how they fit in your mouth, you will begin to speak more clearly and easily.
