During one of your dental appointments, your dentist might have recommended that you get your wisdom teeth removed. You might not think this is necessary, especially since they’re at the back of your mouth and you can’t really see them. Even if they don’t give you discomfort, there are other reasons why taking them out can be beneficial in the long run! Read on to learn the importance of wisdom teeth extractions and when they’re needed.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Your wisdom teeth are the third and last molars to come in, typically when you’re between 17 and 25 years old. Back in ancient human history, people used to chew and gnaw on tough foods that required the use of all teeth. With our changes in diet and a narrower facial structure over the ages, our wisdom teeth hardly have space to fit in our mouths. Some people don’t have any at all!

Do I Need to Get My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

If you have wisdom teeth, then you do have risks of partial eruption or impaction. Should these be left untreated, you could experience the following issues:

  • Cavity formation due to gum pockets that form, which can easily trap bacteria and cause cavities.
  • Gum inflammation that makes it difficult to clean the partially erupted wisdom teeth, which can result in periodontal disease.
  • Damage to adjacent teeth due to the final molars pushing against them, causing misalignment problems.
  • Damage to the jaw due to cysts that can form around your teeth and harm the nerves.
  • Sinus issues—increased pressure and congestion.

How Will My Wisdom Teeth Be Extracted?

Your dentist will decide the best method to remove your wisdom teeth depending on your situation. If there’s minor exposure of the tooth, then you’ll need local anesthesia before your dentist could gradually wobble it back and forth until it comes out of the jawbone. If it’s stuck beneath the gum line, they’ll need to make a small hole in the gums to expose the wisdom tooth, and then remove it in sections for a cleaner and easier process.

Whichever procedure you go through, you can be sure to enjoy an improved dental health with your wisdom teeth gone. Consult your dentist if you still have concerns about the procedure, and they’ll be more than happy to help you!
